Philippians 3:7-9 – Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith.

“What is it going to take?” If you have ever shopped for a car, or an appliance, or a window replacement, the sales person may have finally gotten to this question. What is going to take, to close the deal?

Paul’s letter to the Philippians gives a great answer to this very question. The world tells us that our identity, our worth, our influence is to be based on what we own, what we drive, or what we control. Paul certainly thought he met all the worldly requirements. He was circumcised on the eighth day, an Israelite, a member of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews. And as to the law Paul was a notable Pharisee, righteous beyond blame.

And as for his zeal for the law, he was a persecutor of the church. Yet, Paul had come to realize through the grace of Jesus Christ, that all those trappings were worthless rubbish. All it takes is a relationship, a faith, a trust in the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ.

Let us be truly thankful, humble, and obedient to the call God has placed on all our lives. Let us make disciples and spread spiritual holiness throughout our land.

May the blessings and peace of Christ be upon each of you.

Philippians 4:4 – Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, Rejoice.

This verse brings to mind that wonderful chorus by the same name, “Rejoice in the Lord, always, again I say rejoice.” That particular chorus is often sung as a round, with one group beginning, and then another group joining in.

It is such a catchy, peppy song. It lifts you up, gets you in the spirit.

But there is a challenge to this song. When does it properly end. Each group that is singing, simply keys on the other group. One group follows another, follows another. What if nobody stops singing?

Of course, that is the whole point of this verse. We are not to stop singing, stop rejoicing, stop praising the Lord.

Let us be truly thankful, humble, and obedient to the call God has placed on all our lives. Let us make disciples and spread spiritual holiness throughout our land.

May the blessings and peace of Christ be upon each of you.
